If you think you know what's going to happen next in this YA sci-fi thrill ride, think again. A spectacular adventure from start to finish, The Connection by Dana Claire is YA at it's best.

This book takes off running on the very first chapter, when high school student Beatrice Walker meets a boy in her class named Cash Kingston. Although Cash is very, very handsome, he is also brusque and standoffish. Beatrice isn't sure if she likes him at first and then, when she returns home after school to find him having a heated conversation with her father, she's downright infuriated by him. But what Beatrice learns that afternoon alters the course of her life forever.

See, Cash and his sister, Tasha are aliens from a planet called Ferro. Beatrice's parents were agents with the Department of Alien Affairs tasked with helping them to assimilate until...something went wrong. I won't say what, because it would be a spoiler, but suffice it to say that the eventual reveal leads to an ending that I did not see coming. The whole thing culminates in Beatrice learning that she has a connection to Cash that no human could understand and he has a need to keep her safe.

This book was somewhat of a balm to the YA fatigue that I'm sure we've all been experiencing. This was different than the average Young Adult novel and definitely worth the read.  Watching Cash and Beatrice go from outright hatred for each other at the beginning of the novel to eventually growing to trust and care about one another was rewarding and romantic.

Dana Claire's writing was tight and plot-driven with just enough balance of romance and action to keep the story moving forward. I can't wait to find out where this story goes in the next book and I will be adding it to my reading list when it is announced!
