Take one cup of memoir, add a tablespoon of history and just a splash of cookbook and what do you get? This entrancing memoir from Carole Bumpus about her journey across Italy and the food that she ate along the way.

A September to Remember: Searching for Culinary Pleasures at the Italian Table, is not just a memoir, not just a book about Italian history and not just a gorgeous Italian cookbook but it's all three in one!

Lets go back to the beginning. This story is the result of a trip. In 1998, Carole Bumpus and her husband, Winston traveled from the U.S. to the vibrant, enigmatic country of Italy. Everything that followed is contained in the pages of  A September To Remember and by the end of the memoir, you feel as though you have been on a tour of Italy yourself.

From the food and history to the music and the people, Bumpus creates a picture of one of the oldest countries in the world that comes alive on the page. Not only does she capture the serious, bloody history of the country in her descriptions but she also brings out the colorful, fun side of it as well. Historical and modern Italy are connected through her storytelling with a kind of enchantment that I have never before found in any memoir.

Apart from these stunning descriptions, Bumpus adds a funny note by relating a lot of the normal vacation problems that we've all experienced at some point, and some that almost seem like they could have come from a sitcom, they were so unique. After all, the book actually begins with Bumpus' luggage getting lost by the airline, leading her to have to go shopping for underwear at what turns out to be a very expensive lingerie store.

It's these kinds of anecdotes that make the book shine and make it well worth a read. I recommend this one highly!
